How to Get Your Austrian Vignette — Step-by-Step
Complete Purchase Process
Determine Your Vignette Type
Decide whether you need a 10-day (€9.90), 2-month (€29.00), or annual (€103.80) vignette based on your travel duration and frequency. Consider the digital option if you want to avoid windscreen sticker application.
Check Your Vehicle Category
Confirm your vehicle is under 3.5 tonnes permissible total weight. Motorcycles require a vignette but at a lower price. Vehicles over 3.5 t use the GO-Maut system instead.
Choose Purchase Channel
Options include: ASFINAG website (digital only), ASFINAG app (digital only), petrol stations (physical and digital), ÖAMTC/ARBÖ service centres, post offices, and some supermarkets near borders.
Select Start Date
For digital vignettes: select your desired start date (up to 18 days in advance). For physical vignettes: validity begins on the date of purchase. Annual vignettes are valid from 1 December of the preceding year.
Complete the Purchase
Pay by card or cash (physical locations). For digital: provide your vehicle number plate, country of registration, and payment details. You will receive a confirmation email with your registration number.
Apply or Confirm Registration
Physical sticker: remove the backing and affix to the inside of the windscreen, lower-left corner (from driver's perspective), visible from outside. Digital: check your confirmation email and verify registration at asfinag.at.
Verify Before Driving
Double-check validity dates on the sticker or in your confirmation. For digital vignettes, you can verify registration status on the ASFINAG website using your number plate.
Keep Your Receipt
Retain your purchase receipt or confirmation email as proof of transaction. In case of any dispute, this document may be required to demonstrate when and where the vignette was purchased.
Check Special Toll Roads
Review your planned route for any special toll roads (Sondermaut). These require separate payment in addition to the vignette. See our Service Area page for details.
Renew Before Expiry
Monitor your vignette's expiry date. Annual vignettes expire on 31 January; 10-day and 2-month vignettes expire on their stated end date. Do not drive on motorways after expiry without a new vignette.

- For digital: have your number plate and country of registration ready
- For online purchase: have a valid payment card ready

- For physical: check the sticker is undamaged before affixing
- Affix physical sticker to inside of windscreen, lower-left corner
- Do not affix to the outside of the windscreen
- Verify digital registration on ASFINAG website after purchase
- Save confirmation email or receipt
- Check your route for special toll roads requiring additional payment

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Affixing sticker to the outside of the windscreen — only the inside is valid
- Buying for the wrong vehicle — digital vignettes are plate-specific
- Confusing validity dates — 2-month vignettes run by calendar month, not 60 days
- Assuming transit exemption — no exemption exists for short motorway use
- Forgetting special toll roads — vignette does not cover all Austrian toll roads
- Not checking rental car policy — some rental companies provide vignettes; others do not
- Removing a valid sticker — stickers cannot be transferred; removal renders them invalid
- Purchasing from unofficial sources — only buy from ASFINAG or authorised retailers
