What Is the Austrian Vignette?

The Austrian motorway vignette (Autobahnvignette) is a toll permit — either a physical windscreen sticker or a digital number-plate registration — that authorises vehicles to use Austria's motorway and expressway network managed by ASFINAG. The system applies to all motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes permissible total weight.

Driving without a valid vignette is a traffic offence subject to on-the-spot fines. Enforcement uses automated camera systems and police checks at border crossings and on the road network.

Note: Since 2018, Austria offers a digital vignette linked to your number plate — no sticker required. Both formats remain valid.

Common Questions

Do I need a vignette for transit through Austria?

Yes. Any use of the motorway or expressway network requires a valid vignette, including short transit sections. If you use only federal roads (Bundesstraßen), no vignette is needed, but journey times will be significantly longer.

Can I buy a vignette at the border?

Physical vignettes are available at petrol stations near major border crossings and at ÖAMTC/ARBÖ service points. Digital vignettes can be purchased online up to 18 days in advance. Buying in advance is strongly recommended to avoid queues.

What is the penalty for driving without a vignette?

Enforcement officers may issue an on-the-spot fine (Organmandat). For passenger cars, immediate payment is typically €120. Refusing or failing to pay may result in an administrative fine of up to €3,000 and potential vehicle impoundment.
